Filling a Prescription Using Next Fill Quantity

The Next Fill Qty fields in the Rx Detail Extended tab allow you to specify a prescription quantity and days supply that will be applied on the next fill of the prescription. These fields can be used for any situations where the quantity for the next fill will be different than the quantity in the current prescription (e.g. vacation supplies, trial quantities).

Example: The doctor prescribes a a new medication, but the patient will be provided with a 30-day trial supply, and will get a 90-day supply if the medication is tolerated. You can create the current prescription for the 30-day supply and use the Next Fill Qty fields to set the quantity and days supply for the next fill.

How does this benefit my pharmacy?

  • VACATION SUPPLY: By entering the regular quantity in the Next Fill Qty fields, it ensures the prescription returns to the regular refill schedule and prevents the vacation supply from being provided continuously.

  • TRIAL QUANTITIES: Repeats are dispensed as often as the Doctor intended, thereby maximizing the profit per prescription. For example, in the case of an Ontario Drug Benefit 30 Day Trial, if the next fill should be for 60 days and the Next Fill Qty is not entered on the first fill, the next person to fill the prescription will increase the quantity to 90 - this will cause the pharmacy to lose 4 dispensing fees per year ... just for that prescription. Just image if this happens for hundreds of new prescriptions ... there would be thousands of dollars in lost fees per year!

  • MEDICATION SYNC: When fill short fills to synchronize a patient’s prescriptions to the same refill schedule, the Next Fill Qty fields ensure the prescription is refilled for the newly synched quantity.

 

To fill a prescription using Next Fill Qty in PharmaClik Rx:

  1. Create a new prescription until you reach the Rx Detail stage.

  2. Enter any required information in the main tab of Rx Detail.

  3. Select the Extended tab.
  4. In the Next Fill Qty field, enter the amount that will be dispensed the next time the prescription is filled.
  5. In the Next Fill Qty Days Supply field, enter the days supply that will be provided the next time the prescription is filled.

    Example: In the image below, the prescription was originally filled for 30 tablets. When this prescription is refilled, the quantity to be dispensed will be 90 tablets.

  6. Continue to fill the prescription as usual.

Note: The Next Fill Qty field corresponds to the Qty field in the main tab of Rx Detail; on refill, the value in this field will be applied to the Qty field and the value in the Next Fill Qty field becomes blank. The Next Fill Days Supply field corresponds to the DS field in the main tab of Rx Detail; on refill, the value in this field will be applied to the DS field and the value in the Next Fill Qty Days Supply field becomes blank.
